CiSoM Brasil: A Photograhic Walk of Decolonial Fashion

Walking as a pedagogical and a fashion contemplative act. Through walking, we can stroll the past, with history in the present, and possible futures. Pelourinho (Brasil) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a territory where people can learn, experience, and sense Afro-Brazilian aesthetics and culture.

Pelourinho is a cultural and commercial center; walking through its parallelepipeds streets, one finds stores, street vendors, and material goods, such as accessories (belts, wallets, keychains, backpacks, bags, hats, glasses), clothing items (dresses, pants, t-shirts) and footwear (sandals, flip-flops, shoes, sneakers), which are goods rarely framed as a fashion. Therefore, to delink from European binaries, the Decolonial Fashion Photo Walking brings pluraversality and fashion worlds that have been erased or silenced.

For the GFA24, the Research Center for Social Sciences in Fashion (CiSoM) is presenting photos, notes, and reflections from the walking tour as a way to learn and exchange fashion knowledge. The project was made possible by the efforts of local initiatives, dedicated scholars and independent collectives.
