An invitation to provoke change! as we are facing an almost global shift to the far-right, from a critical fashion research perspective.
Fighting Fascism Through Fashion: Hacking White Supremacy, by the Austrian Center for Fashion Research in collaboration with “Fashion and the Far Right: The New Complexity in Style” at the academy of fine arts, Vienna.
Our GFA24 hosting programme is an invitation to provoke change! as we are facing an almost global shift to the far-right. From a critical fashion research perspective, we have been observing this political development also on a vestimentary level – “fashion has been weaponized” (givhan, 2017). This workshop created the opportunity for participants to hack current cultures of hate via fashion! It crafted and designed against fascist fashion and created visual counter narratives.
Our workshop was about fostering a forward-thinking and future-oriented level of democratic fashion practice that aims at reducing violence, racism, hate and radicalization as a counter action to the rise of contemporary far-right extremism in many countries worldwide. Together we worked on fashion based counter strategies to contemporary authoritarianism, far-right extremism. In our fight for global and racial justice, we forged a bold vision: creating hacking strategies together, from different positions/locations in the world.
Together, we developed various counter-strategy concepts, ranging from handmade fashion hacks to counter-images, short videos, memes, and photos, that provide information on fashion and fascism, and take counter-action against the global shift to the right.
